The proper management of healthcare waste<\/a> is a critical aspect of infection control and environmental<\/a> protection. In Rwanda<\/a>, healthcare facilities generate a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including infectious and hazardous materials, which require special handling and disposal<\/a>. Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a common method used to manage healthcare waste<\/a>, but its effectiveness and safety vary depending on the facility and practices employed. This article compares the waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> practices at Nyamata Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> with other healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a> has made significant progress in improving its healthcare system, with a focus on providing quality services to its citizens. However, the management of healthcare waste<\/a> remains a challenge, particularly in rural areas where resources are limited. Nyamata Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>, located in the Eastern Province, is one of the largest healthcare facilities in the country, providing referral services to a large population. The hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices have been studied and compared with those of other healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a> to identify best practices and areas for improvement.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> practices at Nyamata Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> and other healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>. A questionnaire was administered to healthcare workers and waste<\/a> management personnel at the hospital<\/a> and other facilities, including district hospitals, health<\/a> centers, and private clinics. The questionnaire sought information on waste<\/a> generation, segregation, storage, transportation, and disposal<\/a> practices, as well as the types of incinerators used and their maintenance.<\/p>\n

The hospital<\/a> uses a modern incinerator<\/a> that meets international standards, with a capacity to burn 500 kg of waste<\/a> per day. In contrast, many other healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a> lack adequate waste<\/a> management infrastructure, relying on outdated incinerators or open burning<\/a> of waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n
