Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management is a critical component of healthcare services, particularly in developing countries where inadequate waste<\/a> disposal<\/a> can lead to the spread of diseases and environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>. In Rwanda<\/a>, the Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a> has implemented an incineration<\/a> system to manage its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, providing a model for other healthcare facilities in the country and beyond. This article examines the experience of Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a> in using incineration<\/a> as a solution to medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is a significant challenge in healthcare settings, with potential risks to patients, staff, and the environment. Improper disposal<\/a> of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, contamination of soil and water, and the release of toxic pollutants into the air. In Rwanda<\/a>, the healthcare sector generates approximately 10 tons of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day, with a significant portion of this waste<\/a> being hazardous in nature. The Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a>, located in the Western Province of Rwanda<\/a>, is one of the largest referral hospitals in the country, serving a population of over 2 million people.<\/p>\n

The Problem of Medical<\/a> Waste<\/a> Management in Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Prior to the introduction of the incineration<\/a> system, Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a> faced significant challenges in managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> generated approximately 500 kg of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day, including hazardous materials such as sharps, pharmaceuticals, and pathology waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management system was inadequate, with waste<\/a> often being disposed of in an uncontrolled manner, posing risks to patients, staff, and the environment.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Kibuye Referral Hospital<\/a> introduced an incineration<\/a> system to manage its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. The system, which consists of a single-chamber<\/a> incinerator<\/a> with a capacity to burn 200 kg of waste<\/a> per hour, was designed and installed by a local company in collaboration with international partners. The incinerator<\/a> is equipped with a scrubber<\/a> system to minimize air pollution<\/a> and a ash handling system to manage the residual ash.<\/p>\n

        3. Provide Technical Support<\/strong>: Technical support should be provided to healthcare facilities to ensure the safe and effective operation of incineration<\/a> systems.<\/li>\n
