The Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a>, located in Rwanda<\/a>, provides essential healthcare services to the surrounding community. However, the hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices, including the use of a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, pose significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> concerns. The incinerator<\/a>, used to dispose of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, releases a cocktail of pollutants into the air, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, dioxins, and furans. These pollutants can have devastating effects on the health<\/a> of workers employed at the hospital<\/a>, particularly those involved in the waste<\/a> management process. This study aims to investigate the occupational exposure to pollutants from the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a> and its impact on workers’ health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a common method of medical waste disposal<\/a> in many low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda<\/a>. However, the process of incineration<\/a> releases a range of pollutants, including particulate matter, gases, and volatile organic compounds. Prolonged exposure to these pollutants can cause a range of health<\/a> problems, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease<\/a>, and cancer. Workers involved in the waste<\/a> management process, including those operating the incinerator<\/a>, are at higher risk of exposure to these pollutants due to their proximity to the source of emission.<\/p>\n

This study employed a cross-sectional design, involving a survey of 100 workers employed at the Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a>. The participants were selected using a stratified random sampling technique, with 50 workers involved in the waste<\/a> management process and 50 workers from other departments. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on demographic characteristics, occupational history, and self-reported health<\/a> symptoms.
