Hospital<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>: A Case Study of Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>’s Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a>, a small landlocked country in Eastern Africa<\/a>, has made significant strides in improving its healthcare system over the past few decades. However, the country still faces numerous challenges in managing hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>, which poses significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks. In this article, we will examine the hospital<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> practices at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>, a major healthcare facility in Rwanda<\/a>, and explore the challenges, successes, and lessons learned from their incineration<\/a> experiences.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Introduction to Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> is a 150-bed hospital<\/a> located in Ngoma District, Eastern Province, Rwanda<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> provides medical<\/a> services to a population of approximately 1.5 million people and generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>. To manage this waste<\/a>, the hospital<\/a> has an on-site incinerator<\/a> that has been in operation since 2010.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Incineration<\/a> Practices at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The incinerator<\/a> at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> is a simple, single-chamber<\/a> unit that uses diesel<\/a> fuel to burn waste<\/a> at a temperature<\/a> of around 800\u00b0C. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to handle a maximum of 200 kg of waste<\/a> per hour, which is significantly less than the hospital<\/a>’s actual waste<\/a> generation rate. As a result, the incinerator<\/a> operates at near-capacity, with waste<\/a> being burned in batches throughout the day.<\/p>\n

The hospital<\/a> has a waste<\/a> management policy that requires segregation of waste<\/a> into different categories, including infectious, non-infectious, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>. However, in practice, waste<\/a> segregation is often inadequate, and different types of waste<\/a> are frequently mixed together. This can lead to incomplete combustion<\/a> and the release of toxic pollutants, including dioxins and furans, into the environment.<\/p>\n

Challenges Facing the Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the importance of the incinerator<\/a> in managing hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>, the facility faces several challenges that impact its effectiveness. Some of the key challenges include:<\/p>\n

        Based on the findings of this case study, the following recommendations are made:<\/p>\n

        1. Establish a Regular Maintenance Schedule<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should establish a regular maintenance schedule to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the incinerator<\/a>.<\/li>\n

          <\/p>\n

        2. Improve Waste<\/a> Segregation Practices<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should improve waste<\/a> segregation practices to ensure complete combustion<\/a> and minimize the release of toxic pollutants.<\/li>\n

          <\/p>\n

        3. Provide Training and Capacity Building<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should provide training and capacity building to hospital<\/a> staff on waste<\/a> management and incineration<\/a> practices.<\/li>\n

          <\/p>\n

        4. Develop a Clear Regulatory Framework<\/strong>: The government of Rwanda<\/a> should develop a clear regulatory framework to provide guidelines and standards for hospital<\/a> waste<\/a> management and incineration<\/a> practices.<\/li>\n
