The Gisenyi District Hospital<\/a>, located in the Western Province of Rwanda<\/a>, is one of the major healthcare facilities in the region, providing essential medical<\/a> services to the local population. However, the hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices, particularly the use of a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, have raised concerns about the potential environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> impacts of air pollution<\/a> on the surrounding communities. This article aims to assess the air pollution<\/a> from the Gisenyi District Hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> and explore the implications for environmental<\/a> health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a common practice in many healthcare facilities, including hospitals, to manage medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. However, the combustion<\/a> process can release a range of pollutants into the air, including particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and dioxins\/furans. These pollutants can have adverse effects on human health<\/a>, including respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease<\/a>, and cancer.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

This study was conducted over a period of six months, from January to June 2022. Air samples were collected from the vicinity of the Gisenyi District Hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> using a portable<\/a> air sampler. The samples were analyzed for PM, CO, VOCs, and dioxins\/furans using standard laboratory methods. Additionally, questionnaires were administered to nearby residents to assess their perception of air pollution<\/a> and related health<\/a> symptoms.<\/p>\n

The CO concentration averaged 10 ppm, exceeding the WHO<\/a> guideline of 4.4 ppm. VOCs, including benzene, toluene, and xylene, were also detected at concentrations above the WHO<\/a> recommended limits.<\/p>\n

The questionnaire survey revealed that 80% of the respondents perceived air pollution<\/a> as a major problem in the area, with 60% reporting respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The survey also found that 40% of the respondents had experienced eye irritation, headaches, and nausea, which are common symptoms associated with exposure to air pollutants.<\/p>\n
