The State of Medical<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>: Lessons from the CHUB Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a>, a small landlocked country in East Africa<\/a>, has made significant strides in recent years to improve its healthcare system. However, the management of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> remains a significant challenge. The country’s healthcare facilities generate a substantial amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious and hazardous materials, which poses a risk to public health<\/a> and the environment. Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is one of the commonly used methods for managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, and the CHUB (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Butare) waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> is one of the few facilities in Rwanda<\/a> that uses this method. This article examines the state of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>, with a focus on the CHUB waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, and highlights lessons learned from its operations.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> involves the burning<\/a> of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> at high temperatures to reduce its volume and destroy pathogens. This method is widely used globally, particularly in developing countries, due to its effectiveness in reducing the risk of infection and environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>. However, incineration<\/a> also has its drawbacks, including the potential for air pollution<\/a> and the generation of toxic ashes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In Rwanda<\/a>, the management of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is regulated by the Ministry of Health<\/a> and the Rwanda<\/a> Environment Management Authority (REMA). The country has a total of 457 healthcare facilities, including hospitals, health<\/a> centers, and clinics, which generate an estimated 10-15 tons of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day. The majority of this waste<\/a> is disposed of through incineration<\/a>, landfilling, or dumping.<\/p>\n

The CHUB Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The CHUB waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, located in the southern province of Rwanda<\/a>, is one of the few medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incinerators in the country. The facility was established in 2013 with funding from the German government and has a capacity to incinerate 200 kg of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per hour. The incinerator<\/a> uses a double-chamber<\/a> design, which ensures that the waste<\/a> is burned at high temperatures (up to 1200\u00b0C) to minimize the generation of toxic emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n
