Comparing Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> and Alternative Treatment Methods at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>: A Feasibility Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a>, a country with a growing healthcare system, faces significant challenges in managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, particularly at hospitals. Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>, one of the major healthcare facilities in the country, generates a substantial amount of waste<\/a> daily. The hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices have raised concerns about environmental<\/a> and public health<\/a> impacts. This article compares waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> and alternative treatment methods at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>, with a focus on their feasibility, advantages, and limitations.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious, pathological, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>, poses significant risks to human health<\/a> and the environment if not managed properly. The World Health<\/a> Organization (WHO<\/a>) recommends that healthcare facilities adopt safe and environmentally friendly waste<\/a> management practices. In Rwanda<\/a>, the Ministry of Health<\/a> has developed guidelines for medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management, but their implementation remains a challenge.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a> currently uses incineration<\/a> as its primary method for medical<\/a> waste<\/a> treatment. The hospital<\/a> operates a single-chamber<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, which burns waste<\/a> at temperatures between 800\u00b0C and 1000\u00b0C. While incineration<\/a> can reduce the volume of waste<\/a>, it has several drawbacks. The incineration<\/a> process releases toxic gases, including dioxins and furans, which can have severe environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> impacts. Moreover, the hospital<\/a>’s incinerator<\/a> is often not functioning optimally, leading to incomplete combustion<\/a> and the release of particulate matter.<\/p>\n

Alternative Treatment Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Several alternative treatment methods can be considered for medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management at Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital<\/a>. These include:<\/p>\n
