Evaluating the Efficiency of the Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a> at University Teaching Hospital<\/a> of Kigali, Rwanda<\/a>: A Comparative Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The University Teaching Hospital<\/a> of Kigali (UTH-K) is one of the largest and most reputable healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, providing tertiary care services to patients from all over the country. Like any other healthcare facility, UTH-K generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>, that requires proper management to prevent environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> hazards. In 2015, UTH-K partnered with the Rwandan Ministry of Health<\/a> and international organizations to install a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> on its premises. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UTH-K and compare it with other waste<\/a> management methods used in similar healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> management is a critical aspect of healthcare facilities, as improper disposal<\/a> of waste<\/a> can lead to environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>, spread of diseases, and contamination of water and soil. The World Health<\/a> Organization (WHO<\/a>) recommends that healthcare facilities adopt safe and efficient waste<\/a> management practices to minimize the risks associated with waste<\/a> disposal<\/a>. In Rwanda<\/a>, the Ministry of Health<\/a> has established guidelines for waste<\/a> management in healthcare facilities, which include segregation, storage, transportation, and disposal<\/a> of waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UTH-K was installed in 2015, with the capacity to burn up to 50 kg of waste<\/a> per hour. The incinerator<\/a> is equipped with a scrubber<\/a> and a electrostatic precipitator to minimize air pollution<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> generates an average of 200 kg of waste<\/a> per day, which includes infectious waste<\/a>, pharmaceutical waste<\/a>, and non-infectious waste<\/a>. Prior to the installation of the incinerator<\/a>, the hospital<\/a> used to outsource its waste<\/a> management to a private company, which would transport the waste<\/a> to a landfill site.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This study used a comparative design to evaluate the efficiency of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UTH-K. Data was collected from UTH-K and two other similar healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, one using a landfill site and the other using a autoclave for waste<\/a> treatment. The efficiency of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> was evaluated based on the following parameters:<\/p>\n

  1. Waste<\/a> reduction ratio<\/strong>: The ratio of the weight of waste<\/a> disposed of to the weight of waste<\/a> generated.<\/li>\n

  2. Destruction efficiency<\/strong>: The percentage of waste<\/a> destroyed by the incinerator<\/a>.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  3. Emissions<\/a><\/strong>: The levels of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen chloride emitted by the incinerator<\/a>.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  4. Operating costs<\/strong>: The cost of operating the incinerator<\/a>, including fuel, maintenance, and personnel costs.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  5. Environmental<\/a> impact<\/strong>: The impact of the incinerator<\/a> on the environment, including soil and water pollution<\/a>.<\/li>\n

    Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    The results of the study show that the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UTH-K is efficient in reducing waste<\/a>, with a waste<\/a> reduction ratio of 0.85. The incinerator<\/a> also has a high destruction efficiency of 95%, indicating that it is effective in destroying infectious waste<\/a>. The emissions<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a> are within the acceptable limits, with a particulate matter concentration of 10 mg\/m3. The operating costs of the incinerator<\/a> are lower compared to the other two facilities, with a monthly cost of $500. The environmental<\/a> impact of the incinerator<\/a> is also low, with minimal soil and water pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    The waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UTH-K is an efficient and effective method of waste<\/a> management, with a high waste<\/a> reduction ratio, destruction efficiency, and low emissions<\/a>. The incinerator<\/a> also has a low environmental<\/a> impact and operating costs. However, the study recommends that the hospital<\/a> should implement regular maintenance and monitoring of the incinerator<\/a> to ensure its optimal performance. The study also suggests that other healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a> should consider installing waste<\/a> incinerators as a sustainable and efficient method of waste<\/a> management.<\/p>\n

    Recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n

    2. Monitoring<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should monitor the emissions<\/a> and environmental<\/a> impact of the incinerator<\/a> to ensure that they are within the acceptable limits.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    3. Training<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should provide training to its staff on the proper use and operation of the incinerator<\/a>.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    4. Waste<\/a> segregation<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should implement proper waste<\/a> segregation and sorting to ensure that only infectious waste<\/a> is incinerated.<\/li>\n

    5. Cost-benefit analysis<\/strong>: The hospital<\/a> should conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine the feasibility of installing a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> compared to other waste<\/a> management methods.<\/li>\n

      Limitations<\/strong><\/p>\n

      <\/p>\n

      The study had some limitations, including the small sample size and the lack of data on the long-term environmental<\/a> impact of the incinerator<\/a>.
