In Tanzania<\/a>, the formulation of policies and guidelines for healthcare waste management<\/a> has been in place for several years, with the aim of ensuring that all healthcare facilities adhere to best practices in waste<\/a> handling, storage, and disposal<\/a>. One key component of healthcare waste management<\/a> is the use of waste<\/a> incinerators, which are designed to reduce the volume of waste<\/a> and destroy pathogens. This article assesses the performance of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital<\/a> in Tanzania<\/a>, with a view to identifying lessons for healthcare facilities in the country.<\/p>\n

Temeke Regional Referral Hospital<\/a> is one of the largest public hospitals in Tanzania<\/a>, providing healthcare services to over 1 million people. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of healthcare waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and anatomical waste<\/a>. To manage this waste<\/a>, the hospital<\/a> has installed a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, which is designed to burn waste<\/a> at high temperatures, reducing the volume of waste<\/a> and destroying pathogens. The incinerator<\/a> has a capacity of 100 kg of waste<\/a> per hour and is equipped with air pollution<\/a> control devices to minimize emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

This study was conducted over a period of 6 months, during which data was collected on the performance of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital<\/a>.
