The healthcare sector is one of the largest generators of hazardous waste<\/a>, which poses significant risks to human health<\/a> and the environment if not disposed of properly. In this article, we will explore the sustainable waste<\/a> management practices in Rwanda<\/a>’s healthcare sector, with a focus on the Rilima Orthopedic Hospital<\/a> incinerator<\/a> experience.<\/p>\n

Introduction to Rwanda<\/a>’s Healthcare Waste Management<\/a> Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a>’s healthcare sector generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including non-hazardous and hazardous waste<\/a>. The Rilima Orthopedic Hospital<\/a>, located in the Nyagatare District of Rwanda<\/a>, is one of the leading healthcare facilities in the country. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including hazardous waste<\/a>, which required a sustainable and effective management solution. In response to this challenge, the hospital<\/a> installed an incinerator<\/a>, which has become a model for sustainable waste<\/a> management in Rwanda<\/a>’s healthcare sector.<\/p>\n

The incinerator<\/a>, which was installed in 2018, is designed to burn hazardous waste<\/a> at high temperatures, reducing the volume of waste<\/a> and eliminating the risk of environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>.
