Assessment of the Environmental<\/a> Impact of the CHUK Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a> in Kigali, Rwanda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The city of Kigali, Rwanda<\/a> has experienced rapid urbanization and economic growth in recent years, resulting in an increased volume of waste<\/a> generation. To mitigate the environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> impacts associated with waste<\/a> management, the Kigali City Council installed a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at the Central Hospital<\/a> of Kigali (CHUK) in 2015. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to burn non-recyclable waste<\/a>, including medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, household waste<\/a>, and industrial waste<\/a>. However, concerns have been raised about the potential environmental<\/a> impacts of the incinerator<\/a>, including air pollution<\/a>, soil contamination, and adverse health<\/a> effects on nearby communities. This article assesses the environmental<\/a> impact of the CHUK waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> in Kigali, Rwanda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> management is a critical issue in urban areas, particularly in developing countries where infrastructure and resources are limited. Incineration<\/a> is one of the waste<\/a> management strategies that has been adopted in various parts of the world, including Rwanda<\/a>. The CHUK waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> is one of the largest waste<\/a> management facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, serving a population of over 1 million people. The incinerator<\/a> has a capacity to burn up to 50 tons of waste<\/a> per day, reducing the volume of waste<\/a> sent to landfills and minimizing the risk of environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n
