Assessment of the Efficiency of the Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a> at University College Hospital<\/a>, Ibadan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The management of waste<\/a> in healthcare facilities is a critical aspect of ensuring a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, and the surrounding community. University College Hospital<\/a> (UCH), Ibadan, is one of the largest and most prestigious teaching hospitals in Nigeria, generating a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> daily. The hospital<\/a> has a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> in place to manage its waste<\/a>, but its efficiency has not been previously assessed. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at UCH, Ibadan, to identify areas of improvement and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A mixed-methods approach was employed for this study, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The study was conducted over a period of six months, from January to June 2022. Data were collected through:<\/p>\n

  1. Observations<\/strong>: The researcher observed the operation of the incinerator<\/a>, including the feeding rate, temperature<\/a> control, and ash handling.<\/li>\n

  2. Interviews<\/strong>: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the incinerator<\/a> operators, hospital<\/a> management, and environmental<\/a> health<\/a> officers to gather information on the incinerator<\/a>’s performance, maintenance, and challenges.<\/li>\n

  3. Review of documents<\/strong>: Relevant documents, including incinerator<\/a> operation records, maintenance schedules, and waste<\/a> management policies, were reviewed.<\/li>\n

  4. Physical measurements<\/strong>: Temperature<\/a>, particulate matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions<\/a> were measured using a thermometer, PM monitor, and CO analyzer, respectively.<\/li>\n

    2. Emissions<\/a><\/strong>: The average PM emission was 150 mg\/m\u00b3, exceeding the regulatory limit of 100 mg\/m\u00b3. CO emissions<\/a> were within the acceptable limit of 100 ppm.<\/li>\n

    3. Maintenance<\/strong>: The incinerator<\/a> was found to be poorly maintained, with inadequate record-keeping and infrequent servicing.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    4. Operator training<\/strong>: Incinerator<\/a> operators lacked formal training, relying on on-the-job experience.<\/li>\n

The inconsistent feeding rate and poor maintenance of the incinerator<\/a> contribute to excessive PM emissions<\/a>, posing health<\/a> risks to staff and the surrounding community. The lack of formal training for incinerator<\/a> operators and inadequate waste<\/a> management practices exacerbate these issues.<\/p>\n

      To improve the efficiency of the incinerator<\/a> and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, the following recommendations are made:<\/p>\n

      1. Regular maintenance<\/strong>: Schedule regular servicing and maintenance of the incinerator<\/a> to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      2. Operator training<\/strong>: Provide formal training for incinerator<\/a> operators to enhance their knowledge and skills.<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      3. Waste<\/a> management practices<\/strong>: Implement effective waste<\/a> segregation and disposal<\/a> practices, including proper handling and disposal<\/a> of hazardous waste<\/a>.<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      4. Emissions<\/a> monitoring<\/strong>: Install a continuous emissions<\/a> monitoring system to ensure compliance with regulatory limits.<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      5. Incinerator<\/a> upgrade<\/strong>: Consider upgrading the incinerator<\/a> to a more modern and efficient model, incorporating advanced emission control technologies.<\/li>\n

        The assessment of the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at University College Hospital<\/a>, Ibadan, highlights the need for improvement in its efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards.
