The management of waste<\/a> is a critical aspect of healthcare facilities, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital<\/a> (QECH) in Malawi is no exception. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including hazardous medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, which poses a significant risk to human health<\/a> and the environment if not disposed of properly. In an effort to address this challenge, a 500kg\/h mechanical waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> has been proposed for installation at the hospital<\/a>. This article aims to conduct an environmental<\/a> impact assessment (EIA) of the proposed incinerator<\/a> to identify potential environmental<\/a> impacts and recommend mitigation measures.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

QECH is a referral hospital<\/a> located in Blantyre, Malawi, and it generates approximately 500kg of waste<\/a> per day, including hazardous medical<\/a> waste<\/a> such as infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> currently uses a combination of disposal<\/a> methods, including landfilling and open burning<\/a>, which are not environmentally friendly and pose significant risks to human health<\/a>. The proposed 500kg\/h mechanical waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> is expected to provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution for waste<\/a> management at the hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n
