The Mbeere District Hospital<\/a>, located in Embu County, Kenya, has been a beacon of hope for the local community, providing essential medical<\/a> services to thousands of patients every year. However, the hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices had become a major concern, posing significant risks to the environment, public health<\/a>, and the well-being of hospital<\/a> staff and patients. In response to these challenges, the hospital<\/a> embarked on an ambitious project to construct a state-of-the-art waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, which has since become a model for effective waste<\/a> management and infection control in the region.<\/p>\n

Introduction to the Problem<\/h2>\n

Prior to the construction of the incinerator<\/a>, the hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management practices were inadequate, with waste<\/a> being disposed of in makeshift pits and open dumps. This led to the contamination of soil, water, and air, as well as the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and malaria. The hospital<\/a>’s staff and patients were also exposed to toxic fumes, sharp objects, and infectious materials, putting them at risk of injury and infection.<\/p>\n

The Incinerator Project<\/h2>\n

In 2018, the hospital<\/a>, in partnership with the Kenyan government and international donors, launched a project to design and construct a modern waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>. The project aimed to provide a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution for the management of hazardous waste<\/a>, including medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceuticals.
