The increasing amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated by healthcare facilities poses significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks. In Kenya, AFYA Medical<\/a> Services has implemented a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> to manage medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. However, the emissions<\/a> and environmental<\/a> impact of this incinerator<\/a> have raised concerns among local communities and environmentalists. This article assesses the emissions<\/a> and environmental<\/a> impact of AFYA Medical<\/a> Services’ waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> in Kenya.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a common method of waste<\/a> management in healthcare facilities. However, the process can release toxic pollutants into the air, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. These pollutants can have adverse effects on human health<\/a> and the environment. In Kenya, the lack of effective waste<\/a> management infrastructure has led to the reliance on incineration<\/a> as a primary method of medical waste disposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This assessment was conducted through a combination of field observations, literature reviews, and interviews with key stakeholders. Air and water samples were collected near the incinerator<\/a> and analyzed for pollutants. The study also reviewed existing data on the incinerator<\/a>’s emissions<\/a> and environmental<\/a> impact.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The results of the study showed that the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at AFYA Medical<\/a> Services emits significant amounts of pollutants, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. The particulate matter emissions<\/a> exceeded the World Health<\/a> Organization’s (WHO<\/a>) guidelines, posing a risk to human health<\/a>. The incinerator<\/a> also released toxic pollutants, including dioxins and furans, which are known to have carcinogenic effects.<\/p>\n The study also found that the incinerator<\/a>’s ash disposal<\/a> practices were inadequate, leading to the contamination of soil and water sources. The ash, which contains toxic heavy metals, was found to be disposed of in a landfill without proper lining, posing a risk to groundwater contamination.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The emissions<\/a> from the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at AFYA Medical<\/a> Services pose significant health<\/a> risks to the surrounding communities.
