Air pollution<\/a> has become a significant concern globally, with the World Health<\/a> Organization (WHO<\/a>) estimating that nine out of ten people worldwide breathe polluted air. In Kenya, the problem of air pollution<\/a> is exacerbated by the lack of proper waste<\/a> management systems, particularly in rural areas. This study focuses on the impact of Naivasha Level IV Hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> on local communities, highlighting the health<\/a> risks associated with air pollution<\/a> from medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>.<\/p>\n Naivasha Level IV Hospital<\/a> is a major healthcare facility in Naivasha, Kenya, serving a population of over 500,000 people. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious materials. To manage this waste<\/a>, the hospital<\/a> uses an on-site incinerator<\/a>, which burns the waste<\/a> at high temperatures to reduce its volume and potential health<\/a> risks. However, the incineration<\/a> process releases pollutants into the atmosphere, posing health<\/a> risks to local communities.<\/p>\n The combustion<\/a> of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> in incinerators releases a cocktail of toxic pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants can cause a range of health<\/a> problems, from mild respiratory irritation to life-threatening conditions like cancer and neurological damage. The health<\/a> risks associated with air pollution<\/a> from medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> include:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \n<\/ul>\n This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The study involved:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \n<\/ul>\n The study found significant levels of air pollutants in the vicinity of the hospital<\/a>, with PM and CO concentrations exceeding WHO<\/a> guidelines. The questionnaire surveys revealed that local residents and healthcare workers reported respiratory problems, headaches, and other health<\/a> symptoms, which they attributed to air pollution<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a>. The health<\/a> records analysis showed an increase in respiratory and cardiovascular conditions among patients living in areas closest to the hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n This study highlights the significant health<\/a> risks associated with air pollution<\/a> from Naivasha Level IV Hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>. The findings suggest that the incinerator<\/a> is a major source of air pollution<\/a>, posing health<\/a> risks to local communities.
