Introduction to Butaro Hospital<\/h2>\n

Located in the Burera District of Rwanda<\/a>, Butaro Hospital<\/a> is a 150-bed facility that serves a population of over 300,000 people. The hospital<\/a> provides a range of medical<\/a> services, including general medicine, surgery, maternity, and pediatric care. However, like many healthcare facilities in resource-limited settings, Butaro Hospital<\/a> faced significant challenges in managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, which posed a substantial risk to infection control.<\/p>\n

The Problem of Medical Waste<\/h2>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> includes a wide range of materials, from sharps and needles to disposable gloves and gowns, as well as anatomical waste<\/a> and pharmaceuticals. If not disposed of properly, these items can harbor harmful pathogens, contributing to the spread of infections such as HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. In settings where waste<\/a> management infrastructure is inadequate, medical<\/a> waste<\/a> often ends up in landfills or is burned in open pits, releasing toxic fumes and further exacerbating environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> hazards.<\/p>\n
