The rapid growth of the healthcare sector, coupled with inadequate infrastructure and lack of resources, has led to concerns about the environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> impacts of medical waste disposal<\/a>. This article presents a case study of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania<\/a>, and explores the challenges and opportunities for managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> in the country.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tanzania<\/a> generates approximately 240,000 kilograms of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day, with the majority coming from hospitals and healthcare facilities. Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> includes hazardous materials such as sharps, infectious waste<\/a>, pharmaceuticals, and chemical waste<\/a>, which pose significant risks to human health<\/a> and the environment if not disposed of properly. The Tanzanian government has implemented regulations and guidelines for medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management, but enforcement and compliance remain a challenge.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital<\/a> incinerator<\/a> is a state-of-the-art facility located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania<\/a>. The incinerator<\/a> was commissioned in 2018 and has a capacity to handle 500 kilograms of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per hour.
