Tanzania<\/a>, like many developing countries, faces significant challenges in managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. The improper disposal<\/a> of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> poses serious environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks to communities, including the spread of diseases and contamination of water sources. However, one hospital<\/a> in the country is leading the way in reducing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> through the use of a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>. The Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) and the Muhimbili National Hospital<\/a> (MNH) have been using the waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, but in this article, we will focus on the story of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, which is not located in Tanzania<\/a> but we will use it as an example to illustrate the concept.<\/p>\n

The Problem of Medical Waste in Tanzania<\/h2>\n

Tanzania<\/a> generates a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including sharps, chemicals, and infectious materials. The country’s healthcare system is still developing, and the lack of adequate waste<\/a> management infrastructure and protocols exacerbates the problem. Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is often disposed of in landfills or dumped in rivers, posing serious environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks to communities. The Tanzanian government has implemented regulations to manage medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, but enforcement remains a challenge.<\/p>\n

The OAUTHC Waste Incinerator: A Model for Tanzania<\/h2>\n

In 2019, the OAUTHC in Nigeria installed a state-of-the-art waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> to manage its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. Although not in Tanzania<\/a>, this example can be replicated in the country. The incinerator<\/a> uses a combination of burning<\/a> and scrubbing to break down medical<\/a> waste<\/a> into harmless ash and gas<\/a>. The ash is then buried in a designated landfill, while the gas<\/a> is released into the atmosphere after being cleaned and filtered. The incinerator<\/a> has the capacity to process up to 500 kilograms of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day, making it an efficient solution for hospitals and healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n
