Waste<\/a> management is a significant challenge in many developing countries, including Rwanda<\/a>. The increasing amount of waste<\/a> generated by healthcare facilities, in particular, poses a substantial risk to public health<\/a> and the environment. In response to this challenge, the Kigali Hill Side Clinic, a leading healthcare provider in Rwanda<\/a>, has implemented a waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> system to manage its hazardous waste<\/a>. This article shares the clinic’s experience and lessons learned from implementing this system.<\/p>\n

Introduction to Waste Incineration<\/h2>\n

Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is the process of burning<\/a> waste<\/a> materials at high temperatures, reducing their volume and potential harm to the environment. This method is commonly used to manage hazardous waste<\/a>, including infectious and pathological waste<\/a>, which is often generated by healthcare facilities. Incineration<\/a> can be an effective way to destroy pathogens, reduce waste<\/a> volume, and produce energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Kigali Hill Side Clinic’s Journey to Waste Incineration<\/h3>\n

The Kigali Hill Side Clinic, located in the heart of Kigali, Rwanda<\/a>, provides primary and specialized healthcare services to thousands of patients every year. Like many healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, the clinic faced significant challenges in managing its waste<\/a>, including lack of proper storage, transportation, and disposal<\/a> facilities. In 2018, the clinic decided to implement a waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> system to address these challenges and ensure a safe and healthy environment for its patients, staff, and the surrounding community.<\/p>\n

Design and Implementation of the Incineration System<\/h3>\n

The clinic worked with local and international experts to design and implement a state-of-the-art incineration<\/a> system. The system consists of a primary combustion<\/a> chamber<\/a>, a secondary combustion<\/a> chamber<\/a>, and a scrubber<\/a> to remove pollutants from the flue gas<\/a>.
