The world is grappling with the challenges of climate change, and Iraq<\/a> is no exception. The country is facing severe environmental<\/a> degradation, largely due to inadequate waste<\/a> management practices. The healthcare sector, in particular, generates a significant amount of hazardous waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>, which requires specialized disposal<\/a> methods. In recent years, the use of incinerators has become a common practice in Iraqi hospitals, including those in Babel Governorate, to manage hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>. This article aims to quantify the impact of Babel hospital<\/a> waste<\/a> incinerators on reducing greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> and mitigating climate change in Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Introduction to Hospital<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hospital<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a waste<\/a> treatment process that involves the combustion<\/a> of waste<\/a> materials at high temperatures, typically between 800\u00b0C to 1300\u00b0C. The process reduces the volume of waste<\/a> by up to 90% and converts the organic content into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and ash. Incineration<\/a> is considered a suitable method for managing hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>, as it reduces the risk of infection and eliminates the need for landfilling.<\/p>\n

Greenhouse Gas<\/a> Emissions<\/a> from Hospital<\/a> Waste<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>, if not managed properly, can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a>. The decomposition of organic waste<\/a> in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas<\/a> with a global warming potential 28 times higher than carbon dioxide over a 100-year time frame. Additionally, the transportation of waste<\/a> to landfills and the production of new products to replace those disposed of also generate greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Babel Hospital<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incinerators<\/strong><\/p>\n

Babel Governorate, located in central Iraq<\/a>, has a population of over 2 million people. The governorate has several hospitals, including the Babel Teaching Hospital<\/a>, which is one of the largest hospitals in the region. To manage hospital<\/a> waste<\/a>, the Babel Teaching Hospital<\/a> and other hospitals in the governorate have installed waste<\/a> incinerators. These incinerators have a capacity to burn up to 500 kg of waste<\/a> per hour and operate at temperatures ranging from 1000\u00b0C to 1200\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Quantifying the Impact of Babel Hospital<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incinerators<\/strong><\/p>\n

To quantify the impact of Babel hospital<\/a> waste<\/a> incinerators on reducing greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a>, we need to consider several factors, including the amount of waste<\/a> incinerated, the type of waste<\/a> incinerated, and the emissions<\/a> generated during the incineration<\/a> process.<\/p>\n
