Proper management of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is crucial for preventing the spread of diseases and protecting the environment. In Iraq<\/a>, the Maternal Child Hospital<\/a> Soran (MCHS) faces significant challenges in managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. This article assesses the effectiveness of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> at MCHS, evaluating both technical and economic aspects.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Maternal Child Hospital<\/a> Soran is a major healthcare facility in the Erbil Governorate of Iraq<\/a>, providing medical<\/a> services to a large population. As with any healthcare facility, MCHS generates significant amounts of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> currently uses incineration<\/a> as its primary method of waste<\/a> disposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Technical Evaluation<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Incineration<\/a> is a commonly used method for managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, as it reduces the volume of waste<\/a> and kills pathogens. However, the effectiveness of incineration<\/a> depends on several factors, including the design and operation of the incinerator<\/a>, the type and quantity of waste<\/a> being burned, and the emissions<\/a> control systems in place.<\/p>\n

At MCHS, the incinerator<\/a> is a simple, batch-fed unit that burns waste<\/a> at a temperature<\/a> of around 1000\u00b0C. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to handle a maximum of 500 kg of waste<\/a> per day, which is below the actual waste<\/a> generation rate of the hospital<\/a>. This has resulted in frequent overloading of the incinerator<\/a>, leading to incomplete combustion<\/a> and the release of toxic emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n
