Introduction<\/p>\n

The healthcare sector is one of the largest and most significant industries in the world, generating a substantial amount of waste<\/a>. Proper management of healthcare waste<\/a> is essential to prevent harm to human health<\/a> and the environment. In Iraq<\/a>, the Al Mawani General Teaching Hospital<\/a> is one of the prominent healthcare facilities, generating a large quantity of waste<\/a> daily. Incineration<\/a> is a widely used method for managing healthcare waste<\/a>, and energy<\/a> recovery from incineration<\/a> can be a viable option for hospitals to reduce their energy<\/a> consumption and greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a>. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> and energy<\/a> recovery at Al Mawani General Teaching Hospital<\/a>, Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Al Mawani General Teaching Hospital<\/a> is a 500-bed hospital<\/a> located in Basra, Iraq<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> generates approximately 2-3 tons of waste<\/a> daily, including infectious and non-infectious waste<\/a>. The current waste<\/a> management practice at the hospital<\/a> involves disposal<\/a> of waste<\/a> in a nearby landfill, which poses significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks. Incineration<\/a> is a common method for managing healthcare waste<\/a>, as it reduces the volume of waste<\/a> by up to 90% and destroys pathogens.<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> involves the combustion<\/a> of waste<\/a> materials at high temperatures, typically between 800\u00b0C to 1300\u00b0C. The process reduces the volume of waste<\/a>, destroys pathogens, and produces ash and flue gases. The ash can be disposed of in a landfill, while the flue gases are released into the atmosphere after treatment. Incineration<\/a> is a widely used method for managing healthcare waste<\/a>, as it is effective in reducing the risk of infection and environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n
