The country’s healthcare sector, in particular, generates a substantial amount of hazardous waste<\/a> that poses serious risks to human health<\/a> and the environment. This article examines the waste<\/a> management practices at Songea District Hospital<\/a>, with a focus on its incinerator<\/a>, to highlight the successes and challenges faced by healthcare facilities in Tanzania<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Songea District Hospital<\/a>, located in the Ruvuma Region of Tanzania<\/a>, serves a population of approximately 300,000 people. The hospital<\/a> generates an average of 100 kilograms of waste<\/a> per day, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, pharmaceutical waste<\/a>, and non-infectious waste<\/a>. Proper management of this waste<\/a> is crucial to prevent the spread of diseases and protect the environment.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In 2015, Songea District Hospital<\/a> installed an incinerator<\/a> to manage its hazardous waste<\/a>. The incinerator<\/a>, which was donated by a non-governmental organization, has a capacity to burn 50 kilograms of waste<\/a> per hour. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to operate at high temperatures, reaching up to 1000\u00b0C, to ensure the complete destruction of pathogens and other hazardous materials.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The incinerator<\/a> at Songea District Hospital<\/a> has several advantages, including:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n Despite the advantages of the incinerator<\/a>, Songea District Hospital<\/a> faces several challenges in its operation and maintenance. These include:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n The incinerator<\/a> at Songea District Hospital<\/a> is a valuable asset in the management of hazardous waste<\/a>. However, its effectiveness is compromised by inadequate training, insufficient fuel, and poor waste<\/a> segregation practices. To address these challenges, the hospital<\/a> needs to provide regular training to its staff, ensure a steady supply of fuel, and implement proper waste<\/a> segregation practices.
