Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management is a critical aspect of healthcare systems worldwide. The improper disposal<\/a> of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> can have severe consequences on public health<\/a> and the environment. In Iraq<\/a>, the healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including the lack of effective medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management. Al Nu’mani General Hospital<\/a>, located in Baghdad, is one of the largest hospitals in the country, generating a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> daily. This study aims to characterize the medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated at Al Nu’mani General Hospital<\/a> and discuss the implications for incineration<\/a> and disposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is defined as any waste<\/a> generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of humans or animals. It includes a wide range of materials, such as sharps, non-sharps, infectious waste<\/a>, pathological waste<\/a>, and chemical waste<\/a>. The management of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is critical to prevent the spread of diseases, reduce the risk of injury, and minimize the environmental<\/a> impact.<\/p>\n

In Iraq<\/a>, the healthcare system is under significant pressure due to the ongoing conflict, lack of resources, and infrastructure damage. The country’s medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management system is not well-established, and most hospitals lack the necessary facilities and equipment to properly manage medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. As a result, medical<\/a> waste<\/a> is often disposed of in an uncontrolled manner, posing serious risks to public health<\/a> and the environment.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This study was conducted at Al Nu’mani General Hospital<\/a>, which is a 400-bed hospital<\/a> providing a wide range of medical<\/a> services, including emergency care, surgical services, and outpatient clinics. The hospital<\/a> generates approximately 500-600 kg of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> daily.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A comprehensive survey was conducted to characterize the medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated at the hospital<\/a>. The survey included the collection of data on the types and quantities of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated, as well as the current waste<\/a> management practices. The medical<\/a> waste<\/a> was categorized into five main types:<\/p>\n

However, the incineration<\/a> facility is not functioning properly, and the landfill site is not designed to handle medical<\/a> waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n
