Waste<\/a> management is a critical aspect of healthcare services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare facilities often face challenges in managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. Hill Top Hospital<\/a> Clinic in Zambia is one such facility that has implemented waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> as a means of managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. However, the acceptance and concerns of stakeholders regarding waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> at the clinic have not been extensively explored. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the perceptions of stakeholders on waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> at Hill Top Hospital<\/a> Clinic, Zambia, and to identify the factors that influence their acceptance and concerns.<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management is a significant public health<\/a> concern in Zambia, where the healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and insufficient resources. The World Health<\/a> Organization (WHO<\/a>) recommends that healthcare facilities adopt safe and environmentally friendly methods for managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including incineration<\/a>, autoclaving, and landfilling. Incineration<\/a> is a common method of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> management in Zambia, particularly in rural areas where access to other technologies is limited.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hill Top Hospital<\/a> Clinic is a rural healthcare facility located in the Southern Province of Zambia. The clinic provides primary healthcare services to the local community and generates a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and non-infectious waste<\/a>. In 2018, the clinic introduced waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> as a means of managing its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, with the aim of reducing the risk of infection and environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This qualitative study employed a case study design, using semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to collect data from stakeholders at Hill Top Hospital<\/a> Clinic. The study included 30 stakeholders, consisting of healthcare workers, hospital<\/a> administrators, community leaders, and local residents. The stakeholders were selected using a purposive sampling technique, which aimed to capture a diverse range of perspectives and experiences.<\/p>\n

Data collection took place over a period of six months, during which time the researcher conducted 15 semi-structured interviews and 3 focus group discussions. The interviews and focus group discussions explored the stakeholders’ perceptions of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> at the clinic, their concerns and benefits, and the factors that influenced their acceptance of the technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, which involved coding and categorizing the data into themes and sub-themes. The themes that emerged from the data included: benefits of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, concerns about waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, factors influencing acceptance, and recommendations for improvement.<\/p>\n

The study found that stakeholders at Hill Top Hospital<\/a> Clinic had mixed perceptions about waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>. On the one hand, many stakeholders acknowledged the benefits of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, including reduced risk of infection, decreased environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>, and improved hygiene and sanitation at the clinic. One healthcare worker noted, “Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> has reduced the risk of infection among patients and staff, and it has also improved the overall cleanliness of the clinic.”<\/p>\n

On the other hand, some stakeholders expressed concerns about waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, including the potential health<\/a> risks associated with air pollution<\/a>, the lack of proper maintenance and operation of the incinerator<\/a>, and the potential for accidents and injuries. A community leader remarked, “We are concerned about the air pollution<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a>, which may affect the health<\/a> of our community members, particularly children and the elderly.”<\/p>\n

The study also found that several factors influenced the stakeholders’ acceptance of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, including lack of awareness and education about the technology<\/a>, inadequate training and capacity building, and limited community involvement in the decision-making process. One hospital<\/a> administrator noted, “The community was not adequately involved in the decision-making process, which has led to some resistance and skepticism about the technology<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
