The Micheweni District Hospital<\/a>, located in the Pemba Islands, is one of the many healthcare facilities in Tanzania<\/a> that has implemented a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> to manage its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. This article assesses the effectiveness of the Micheweni District Hospital waste incinerator<\/a> in reducing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> and highlights the challenges and opportunities for improvement.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Micheweni District Hospital<\/a> is a referral hospital<\/a> that provides healthcare services to a population of over 150,000 people in the Pemba Islands. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>, which poses a risk to public health<\/a> and the environment if not disposed of properly. In 2015, the hospital<\/a> installed a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> to manage its medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, with the goal of reducing the risk of infection and environmental<\/a> pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

This study assessed the effectiveness of the Micheweni District Hospital waste incinerator<\/a> in reducing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> through a mixed-methods approach.
