Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> and Air Quality: An Assessment of the NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> has become a widely adopted method for managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> in developing countries, including Rwanda<\/a>. The NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a>, located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda<\/a>, is one such facility that has been in operation for several years. However, concerns have been raised about the potential impact of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> on air quality and human health<\/a>. This article aims to assess the NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a>’s effects on air quality and provide recommendations for improvement.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a> was installed in 2015 to manage medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated by the health<\/a> center. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to burn medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious materials, sharps, and non-infectious waste<\/a>, at high temperatures to reduce the volume of waste<\/a> and prevent the spread of diseases. However, the incineration<\/a> process releases pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), into the air.<\/p>\n

Air Quality Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To assess the impact of the NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a> on air quality, we conducted a series of measurements and observations. We used air quality monitoring equipment to measure PM, CO, and VOCs concentrations in the surrounding area.
