Rwanda<\/a>, a small landlocked country in East Africa<\/a>, has made significant strides in recent years in improving its healthcare system and environmental<\/a> management. One critical aspect of healthcare waste management<\/a> is the disposal<\/a> of hazardous waste<\/a>, including medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. The Ntobwe Health<\/a> Center, a rural health<\/a> facility in Rwanda<\/a>, has been at the forefront of implementing waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> as a means of managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a>. This article explores the Ntobwe Health<\/a> Center experience with waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> and its implications for national policy in Rwanda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Ntobwe Health<\/a> Center, located in the Western Province of Rwanda<\/a>, serves a catchment area of approximately 20,000 people. Like many health<\/a> facilities in Rwanda<\/a>, the center generates a significant amount of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>. Prior to the introduction of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>, the health<\/a> center relied on makeshift disposal<\/a> methods, including burying waste<\/a> in pits and burning<\/a> it in open fires.
