Rwanda<\/a>, a small landlocked country in East Africa<\/a>, has made significant strides in improving its healthcare sector in recent years. However, the management of healthcare waste<\/a> remains a critical challenge that poses significant risks to public health<\/a>, the environment, and the country’s development goals. In this article, we will explore the current state of waste<\/a> management in Rwanda<\/a>’s healthcare sector, with a focus on the experience of Gahini District Hospital<\/a>’s incinerator<\/a>, and highlight lessons that can be applied to improve waste<\/a> management practices in the country.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Introduction to Healthcare Waste Management<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Healthcare waste management<\/a> is a critical aspect of healthcare delivery, as it involves the disposal<\/a> of potentially hazardous materials that can harm humans, animals, and the environment. In Rwanda<\/a>, healthcare waste<\/a> is generated from various sources, including hospitals, health<\/a> centers, and clinics. The waste<\/a> includes sharps, infectious waste<\/a>, pharmaceutical waste<\/a>, and non-infectious waste<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n

Despite the importance of proper waste<\/a> management, many healthcare facilities in Rwanda<\/a> lack adequate infrastructure, equipment, and trained personnel to manage waste<\/a> effectively. Gahini District Hospital<\/a>, located in the Kayonza District of Rwanda<\/a>, is one of the few healthcare facilities in the country that has made significant strides in improving its waste<\/a> management practices. In 2015, the hospital<\/a> installed an incinerator<\/a>, which has been instrumental in reducing the amount of waste<\/a> generated by the facility.<\/p>\n

The incinerator<\/a>, which is fueled by diesel<\/a>, is designed to burn hazardous waste<\/a>, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste<\/a>.
