Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a> and Air Quality at Hevi Pediatrics Teaching Hospital<\/a>, Iraq<\/a>: A Comparative Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

The management of waste<\/a> in healthcare facilities is a critical issue, particularly in developing countries where resources are limited and infrastructure is inadequate. Hevi Pediatrics Teaching Hospital<\/a>, located in Iraq<\/a>, is one such facility that faces significant challenges in managing its waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> generates a large amount of waste<\/a>, including hazardous and non-hazardous materials, which can have serious environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> implications if not managed properly. This study aims to investigate the impact of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> on air quality at Hevi Pediatrics Teaching Hospital<\/a> and compare it with alternative waste<\/a> management methods.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hevi Pediatrics Teaching Hospital<\/a> is a major healthcare facility in Iraq<\/a>, providing medical<\/a> services to thousands of patients every year. The hospital<\/a> generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including paper, plastic, glass, and hazardous materials such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and infectious waste<\/a>. The hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management system is primarily based on incineration<\/a>, which involves burning<\/a> waste<\/a> at high temperatures to reduce its volume and destroy pathogens. However, incineration<\/a> can release harmful pollutants into the air, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This study was conducted over a period of six months, from January to June 2022. The study design was comparative, with the aim of evaluating the impact of waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> on air quality at Hevi Pediatrics Teaching Hospital<\/a> and comparing it with alternative waste<\/a> management methods. The study consisted of three phases:<\/p>\n

  1. Phase 1: Baseline assessment<\/strong>: In this phase, the researchers conducted a baseline assessment of the hospital<\/a>’s waste<\/a> management system, including the types and quantities of waste<\/a> generated, waste<\/a> collection and storage practices, and incineration<\/a> procedures.<\/li>\n

  2. Phase 2: Air quality monitoring<\/strong>: In this phase, the researchers monitored air quality at the hospital<\/a> using portable<\/a> air quality monitors.
