This article aims to investigate the air quality around the Copperbelt University Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a> incinerators, assess the <a href=\"https:\/\/incinerator.cn\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"94\" title=\"emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emissions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rfq.hiclover.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"98\" title=\"health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> risks associated with them, and provide recommendations for mitigating these risks.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Copperbelt University Clinic is a healthcare facility located in Kitwe, Zambia, which serves the university community and surrounding areas. The clinic generates a significant amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waste-incinerators.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"73\" title=\"medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a>, including infectious and non-infectious materials, which are disposed of through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incinerator-manufacturer.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"74\" title=\"incineration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incineration<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incinerator-manufacturer.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"74\" title=\"incineration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Incineration<\/a> is a common method of <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cloverepe.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"96\" title=\"disposal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disposal<\/a> in Zambia, particularly for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waste-incinerators.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"73\" title=\"medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a>, due to its perceived effectiveness in reducing <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a> volume and killing pathogens. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incinerator-manufacturer.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"74\" title=\"incineration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incineration<\/a> can release a range of pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals, into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This study employed a quantitative approach, using air quality monitoring equipment to measure the concentrations of pollutants around the Copperbelt University Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a> incinerators. The monitoring equipment included a particulate matter (PM) monitor, a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor, and a volatile organic compound (VOC) monitor. The equipment was placed at three locations around the incinerators: upwind, downwind, and at the fence line of the clinic. The concentrations of PM\u2082.\u2085 and PM\u2081\u2080 exceeded the World <a href=\"https:\/\/rfq.hiclover.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"98\" title=\"health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health<\/a> Organization (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who-covid19-incinerator.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"68\" title=\"covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a>) guidelines of 10 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3 and 20 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3, respectively, at all three locations. The CO concentrations were below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who-covid19-incinerator.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"68\" title=\"covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a> guideline of 4.4 mg\/m\u00b3, but the VOC concentrations exceeded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who-covid19-incinerator.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"68\" title=\"covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a> guideline of 0.1 mg\/m\u00b3 at the downwind location.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rfq.hiclover.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"98\" title=\"health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health<\/a> Risks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/incinerator.cn\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"94\" title=\"emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emissions<\/a> from the Copperbelt University Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/gofullday.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"75\" title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste<\/a> incinerators pose <a href=\"https:\/\/rfq.hiclover.com\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"98\" title=\"health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> risks to the surrounding community, including students, staff, and residents.
