The Rwantonde Health<\/a> Center, located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda<\/a>, serves as a critical healthcare facility for the local population. However, like many healthcare facilities in developing countries, it faces significant challenges in managing its waste<\/a>, including medical<\/a> and hazardous waste<\/a>. To address this issue, the health<\/a> center has installed a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, which has raised concerns about its environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> impacts. This article aims to assess the environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> effects of the Rwantonde Health<\/a> Center waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> and provide recommendations for improvement.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Rwantonde Health<\/a> Center generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, such as syringes, gloves, and bandages, as well as hazardous waste<\/a>, including expired medications and chemicals. Prior to the installation of the incinerator<\/a>, the health<\/a> center relied on makeshift disposal<\/a> methods, including open burning<\/a> and dumping, which posed significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks. The incinerator<\/a> was installed to provide a more efficient and safer means of waste<\/a> disposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

This assessment was conducted using a combination of field observations, interviews with health<\/a> center staff and local residents, and review of existing literature on waste<\/a> incineration<\/a>.
