However, the health<\/a> center faced a significant challenge in managing its waste<\/a>, which posed a significant risk to the health<\/a> and well-being of patients, staff, and the environment. The introduction of a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a> at the health<\/a> center has been a game-changer, significantly reducing the risk of infection and improving overall health<\/a> outcomes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Problem of Medical<\/a> Waste<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including disposable gloves, syringes, and other contaminated materials, poses a significant risk of infection if not disposed of properly. In Rwanda<\/a>, where resources are limited, many health<\/a> centers struggle to manage their waste<\/a> effectively, leading to environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> hazards. The NTARAMA Health<\/a> Center was no exception, with waste<\/a> often being disposed of in makeshift pits or burned in open fires, releasing toxic fumes into the air.<\/p>\n

The Solution: A Waste<\/a> Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In 2018, the NTARAMA Health<\/a> Center installed a waste<\/a> incinerator<\/a>, funded by the Rwanda<\/a> Ministry of Health<\/a> and supported by international partners. The incinerator<\/a> uses a controlled combustion<\/a> process to burn medical<\/a> waste<\/a> at high temperatures, reducing the volume of waste<\/a> by up to 90% and eliminating the risk of infection. The incinerator<\/a> is designed to handle a wide range of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, including sharps, bodily fluids, and other contaminated materials.<\/p>\n

  1. All health<\/a> centers in Rwanda<\/a><\/strong> prioritize the installation of waste<\/a> incinerators to reduce the risk of infection and improve health<\/a> outcomes.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  2. International partners<\/strong> continue to support the Rwanda<\/a> Ministry of Health<\/a> in investing in waste<\/a> management infrastructure, including incinerators and other waste<\/a> disposal<\/a> technologies.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  3. Healthcare workers<\/strong> receive training on proper waste<\/a> management and disposal<\/a> practices to ensure the effective use of incinerators and other waste<\/a> management technologies.<\/li>\n
