Waste<\/a> Management in Rwanda<\/a>: A Case Study of the NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rwanda<\/a>, a small landlocked country in East Africa<\/a>, has made significant strides in recent years in improving its waste<\/a> management practices. The country’s vision to become a middle-income economy by 2030 has led to a focus on sustainable development, including the management of waste<\/a>. One area that has received attention is the management of healthcare waste<\/a>, particularly in rural health<\/a> centers. This article will examine the waste<\/a> management practices at the NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center Incinerator<\/a>, a rural health<\/a> facility in Rwanda<\/a>, and highlight the successes and challenges of waste<\/a> management in the country.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Introduction to NYABIKENKE Health<\/a> Center<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The NYABIKENNE Health<\/a> Center is a rural health<\/a> facility located in the Kirehe District of Rwanda<\/a>. The health<\/a> center serves a population of approximately 20,000 people, providing essential healthcare services such as maternal and child health<\/a>, outpatient care, and laboratory services. The health<\/a> center generates a significant amount of waste<\/a>, including infectious waste<\/a>, sharps, and non-infectious waste<\/a>, which requires proper management to prevent environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> hazards.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Incinerator<\/a>: A Solution to Healthcare Waste Management<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In 2015, the NYABIKENNE Health<\/a> Center installed an incinerator<\/a> to manage its healthcare waste<\/a>. The incinerator<\/a>, which was funded by the Rwanda<\/a> Ministry of Health<\/a> and the World Health<\/a> Organization (WHO<\/a>), is designed to burn infectious waste<\/a>, including sharps, at a temperature<\/a> of 800\u00b0C. The incinerator<\/a> has a capacity to burn 50 kg of waste<\/a> per hour, which is sufficient to manage the health<\/a> center’s daily waste<\/a> generation.<\/p>\n
