Reducing Greenhouse Gas<\/a> Emissions<\/a> from Medical<\/a> Waste<\/a> Incineration<\/a>: A Study of the Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a> Incinerator<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a>, with medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> being a major source of these emissions<\/a>. In developing countries, where healthcare infrastructure is still evolving, the challenge of managing medical<\/a> waste<\/a> in an environmentally friendly manner is even more pronounced. This article presents a study on reducing greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> at the Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of implementing sustainable waste<\/a> management practices in a resource-constrained setting.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Medical<\/a> waste<\/a> incineration<\/a> is a common practice in the healthcare sector, particularly in developing countries where access to modern waste<\/a> management facilities is limited. Incineration<\/a> is used to dispose of infectious and hazardous waste<\/a>, including plastics, papers, and other combustible materials. However, the combustion<\/a> process releases greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), which contribute to climate change.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a> is a typical example of a healthcare facility in a developing country that relies heavily on incineration<\/a> for medical waste disposal<\/a>. The hospital<\/a> generates approximately 10 kilograms of medical<\/a> waste<\/a> per day, which is incinerated in a small-scale incinerator<\/a> on the hospital<\/a> premises. While incineration<\/a> is an effective method for reducing the volume of medical<\/a> waste<\/a>, it poses significant environmental<\/a> and health<\/a> risks due to the release of toxic pollutants and greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This study was conducted over a period of six months, from January to June 2022, at the Byumba Level II Teaching Hospital<\/a> in Rwanda<\/a>. The study aimed to assess the greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from the hospital<\/a>’s incinerator<\/a> and identify opportunities for reducing these emissions<\/a>. The following methodologies were used:<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n
  1. Waste<\/a> characterization<\/strong>: A detailed analysis of the medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated by the hospital<\/a>, including the types and quantities of waste<\/a>, was conducted to understand the composition of the waste<\/a> stream.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  2. Incinerator<\/a> performance assessment<\/strong>: The performance of the incinerator<\/a> was evaluated, including the temperature<\/a>, combustion<\/a> efficiency, and emissions<\/a> of greenhouse gases.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  3. Greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> estimation<\/strong>: The greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a> were estimated using the United States Environmental<\/a> Protection Agency (US EPA) Waste<\/a> Reduction Model (WARM).<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  4. Identification of reduction opportunities<\/strong>: Opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a>, including the use of alternative waste<\/a> management technologies and practices, were identified and evaluated.<\/li>\n

    Results<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The results of the study are presented below:<\/p>\n

      <\/p>\n
    1. Waste<\/a> characterization<\/strong>: The medical<\/a> waste<\/a> generated by the hospital<\/a> consisted of 60% non-infectious waste<\/a>, 20% infectious waste<\/a>, and 20% hazardous waste<\/a>.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    2. Incinerator<\/a> performance assessment<\/strong>: The incinerator<\/a> operated at a temperature<\/a> of 800-1000\u00b0C, with a combustion<\/a> efficiency of 80-90%. The emissions<\/a> of greenhouse gases from the incinerator<\/a> were estimated to be 1.2 tons of CO2-equivalent per year.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    3. Greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> estimation<\/strong>: The greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a> were estimated to be 2.5 tons of CO2-equivalent per year, using the WARM model.<\/li>\n

    4. Identification of reduction opportunities<\/strong>: Several opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions<\/a> from the incinerator<\/a> were identified, including:<\/li>\n
