Waste Management in Rwanda’s Healthcare Sector: A Case Study of Polyclinique La Medicale de Huye’s Incinerator

Background
Polyclinique La Medicale de Huye is a 50-bed healthcare facility that provides a range of medical services, including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and pediatrics. The facility generates approximately 10 kilograms of waste per day, including infectious and non-infectious waste, sharps, and hazardous materials. Prior to the installation of the incinerator, the facility relied on a combination of dumping and burning waste in an open pit, which posed significant environmental and health risks.
The Incinerator
In 2018, Polyclinique La Medicale de Huye installed a medical waste incinerator, which has significantly improved waste management practices at the facility. The incinerator is designed to burn waste at high temperatures, reducing the volume of waste to ash, which can be safely disposed of.
