Introduction
The disposal of medical waste has become a significant concern globally, particularly in developing countries where inadequate waste management systems pose a threat to public health and the environment. Medical waste incineration is a common method used to dispose of hazardous waste, including infectious and pathological waste. However, this method has been criticized for its potential to release toxic pollutants into the air, soil, and water. In Iraq, the management of medical waste has been a pressing issue, particularly in public hospitals. This study aims to investigate the public perception and awareness of medical waste incineration at Al Nu’maniya General Hospital, Iraq.
Background
Medical waste incineration is a widely used method for disposing of hazardous waste in healthcare facilities. The process involves burning waste at high temperatures, reducing its volume and killing pathogens. However, incineration can release toxic pollutants, such as dioxins, furans, and heavy metals, into the atmosphere, posing a risk to human health and the environment. Al Nu’maniya General Hospital, located in the Wasit Governorate, is one of the largest public hospitals in Iraq. The hospital generates a significant amount of medical waste, including infectious and pathological waste. The hospital has an incineration facility on site, which is used to dispose of hazardous waste. However, there is a lack of information on the public perception and awareness of medical waste incineration at the hospital.
Methodology
This study used a survey design to investigate the public perception and awareness of medical waste incineration at Al Nu’maniya General Hospital. A questionnaire was developed and administered to a sample of 200 respondents, including hospital staff, patients, and local residents. The questionnaire included questions on demographic characteristics, awareness of medical waste management practices, perception of incineration as a method of waste disposal, and concerns about the environmental and health impacts of incineration.

The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents (70%) were unaware of the medical waste management practices used at Al Nu’maniya General Hospital. Only 30% of respondents reported being aware of the incineration facility on site. The majority of hospital staff (60%) reported being aware of the incineration facility, while only 20% of local residents reported being aware of the facility.
The results also showed that the majority of respondents (80%) perceived incineration as a necessary method of waste disposal, while 20% reported being opposed to incineration due to concerns about environmental and health impacts.
