Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the CHUK Waste Incinerator in Reducing Medical Waste in Rwanda

The management of medical waste has become a significant concern in Rwanda, as it poses a serious threat to public health and the environment. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK), has implemented various measures to mitigate this issue, including the installation of a waste incinerator. Introduction

Medical waste, including hazardous and non-hazardous materials, is generated in large quantities by healthcare facilities, laboratories, and research institutions. Background

The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK) is the largest healthcare facility in Rwanda, providing tertiary care services to patients from all over the country. Methodology

Despite the effectiveness of the CHUK waste incinerator, several challenges and limitations were identified:
