Residents of Pipestone are speaking out against the proposed expansion of the local waste incinerator, citing concerns over air quality, health risks, and environmental impact. The incinerator, which has been in operation for over two decades, is seeking to increase its capacity to burn an additional 20,000 tons of waste per year.

Health Concerns

One of the primary concerns among residents is the potential health impact of the expanded incinerator. “We’re already seeing high rates of respiratory problems in our community,” said Sarah Johnson, a local resident and mother of two. “The thought of increasing the amount of toxic pollutants in our air is terrifying. We don’t want to see our children suffer from asthma and other health problems because of this incinerator.”

Environmental Impact

In addition to health concerns, residents are also worried about the environmental impact of the expanded incinerator. “The incinerator is already producing toxic ash that’s being dumped in our local landfill,” said Mark Davis, a local environmental activist. “If they increase capacity, that means more ash, more pollution, and more harm to our environment. We need to be looking at sustainable solutions, not increasing our reliance on outdated and polluting technologies.”

Economic Concerns

Some residents are also questioning the economic viability of the expanded incinerator. “The incinerator is a relic of the past,” said Tom Harris, a local business owner. “We should be investing in new, green technologies that create jobs and stimulate local economic growth, not propping up outdated industries that harm our community. We deserve better than to be stuck with a polluting incinerator that’s only going to hold us back.”

What’s Next

The city council is set to vote on the proposed expansion in the coming weeks. Residents are urging council members to reject the proposal and explore alternative solutions for managing waste. “We’re not opposed to finding ways to manage our waste,” said Johnson. “But we need to do it in a way that prioritizes our health, our environment, and our community’s well-being. We hope the city council will listen to our concerns and make the right decision for Pipestone.”

In the meantime, residents are organizing a rally and petition drive to raise awareness about the issue and build support for their cause. For more information, visit the Pipestone Residents Unite website.
