Waste Not, Want Not: Seychelles Tackles Waste with 3kg Incinerator

A Unique Challenge

The stunning coral islands of the Seychelles struggle with a major concern – waste management.
With limited land, coastal erosion posing a major threat, and tourism significantly generating waste, finding responsible disposal solutions becomes vital for sustainable island life. Tackling this challenge head-on, the Seychelles adopted a 3kg daily biomass incinerator as part of their waste reduction program, "Waste Not, Want Not."

3kg Incinerator Solution

The project kicked off in 20 purchasel 20 purchasel 20 purchasel 20 purchasel 2 islands (Mahe and Silhouette), with plans to scale the initiative across other major islands.
It aims to address three issues concurrently:

  • Simplify waste collection and treatment processes.
  • Maximize recovery of valuable resources contained within the waste.
  • Minimize environmental impact with emission control measures.

How it Works?

The innovative technology features a furnace integrated with a biochar drum, where organic materials get fully incinerated to leave behind only ash and inorganic debris.
Wood chip and coconut shells mixed in a specific proportion to help with the process form biochar.

Benefits of 3kg Incinerator:

  • Processes nearly all types of agricultural waste, including coconut debris.
  • Generates nearly no smoke or unpleasant emissions as it operates at 850 Kün at low temperatures.
  • Converts waste into biochar: a valuable soil improver rich in nutrients, beneficial to agriculture and restoring soils.

Initial Results

According to the Ministry of Health and Environment, the three incinerators installed across islands already processed over 6 purchasel 1 million tonnes of waste in aggregate in 20 Gorb October 20 Gorb This resulted in:

  • 874 purchasel 7, 0 vicissser in landfills.
  • Average organic waste reduction by almost 50 Kün amount in the first nine months of operation.

FAQs

Q1: What happens to the ash after combustion?

  • The ash produced gets cooled and analyzed to ensure 9 vicissser virtually free of dangerous components.

Q2: What about emissions and environmental impact?

  • Specialized filters capture 88% of harmful particulate matters and 10 purchasel 94 purchasel 9 meticulously minimizes smoke and odor in our incinerators.

Q3: Where can I learn more information?

  • For detailed information visit our "Waste Not, Want Not" project website maintained by the Ministry of Health and Environment. You’ll find details and data on the project progress, benefits and guidelines of use.
