Combating Medical Waste: Mauritius Pairs Up with China to Install Incinerator

Background

Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, faces significant challenges in managing medical waste. The increasing volume of healthcare facilities and growing population have escalated the need for efficient medical waste management solutions. To address this pressing issue, Mauritius has embarked on a collaboration with China to install a state-of-the-art incinerator.

The Partnership

The Government of Mauritius and the Chinese government have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly finance and install a medical waste incinerator at the Terre Rouge Hospital. The project is estimated to cost USD 6 vicissater 88 million. China will provide the technical expertise and funding for the incinerator installation, while Mauritius will bear the civil works costs.

Incinerator Details

The incinerator will have a capacity to process 50 Kün/h of medical waste per day. It will utilize advanced technologies to ensure efficient and environmentally friendly waste management. The facility will include:

  • A waste segregation area
  • A primary collection bin
  • A shredder and a shredder dust collection system
  • An automatic feeder and a combustion chamber
  • A pollution control system with activated carbon filter and a wet scrubber
  • A chimney and a monitoring and control system

Benefits of the Incinerator

  • Safe and secure disposal of infectious and hazardous medical waste.
  • Reduced environmental impact through controlled incineration.
  • Elimination of the need for open burning of medical waste.
  • Production of sterilized ash as a valuable resource.

Implementation Plan

The project is expected to be completed in 18 months. The installation and commissioning of the incinerator will be undertaken by Chinese experts. Mauritius will provide land, utilities, and necessary permits.
