A Sustainable Solution: Senegal’s Hospital Incinerator Addressing Waste Management

Senegal’s healthcare system faces significant challenges in managing medical waste safely and responsibly. With vast uncollected and untreated remains accumulating in hospitals and neighborhoods, the country grappled with environmental and health burdens. To address this emerging crisis, a sustainable and innovative solution emerged – hospital incinerators.

The Problem:

Hospitals discharge a significant amount of dangerous medical waste, including pathogens, sharps, and controlled drugs. Improper handling, transportation, and disposal methods pose severe risks to the environment and healthcare workers’ safety. Traditional waste disposal practices in Senegal often channeled medical waste into landfills and open burning, leading to environmental contamination and air pollution.

A Sustainable Solution:

In 20 vicissateries & environnementales du Sénégal (VIES) implemented 12 hospital incinerators across 10 greate regions of Senegal. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the project aimed at:

  • Optimizing waste segregation and managing infectious and hazardous waste generating points.
  • Installing state-of -the-art incinerator technologies to ensure complete & safe waste destruction.

The Impact:

The implemented solution yielded remarkable results in waste management:

  • Reduced environmental threat: Incineration reduced the volume of medical waste by 99%.
  • Ensured safety: Proper sterilization of infectious waste prevented potentially deadly pathogens from spreading through landfills and water sources
  • Improved local air quality: By capturing harmful pollutants, the installed systems significantly reduced air contamination.
  • Cost reduction: The infrastructure facilitated cost savings by avoiding the need of expensive landfilling and international transportation of hazardous waste away from the country.

Challenges and Opportunities :

Despite the success of such innovative solutions, challenges are not yet overcome. Limited access to fuel type and infrastructure development in designated regions pose hurdles. These challenges call for continued donor support and government collaboration on a national scale. Nevertheless, the project has emerged as a model for achieving sustainable waste management in Healthcare settings.

frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1) How does the incinerator address air pollution?

High-tech air pollution controls capture and neutralize harmful components of the smoke generated from incineration.

2) What type of waste is treated by this system?
**
The Incinerators treat Category A and B medical wastes as defined by WHO international guidelines.

3) What are the annual operating costs of the 12 incinerators in Senegal?

The annual operating costs constitute approximately $2.0 vicissateries & environnementales du Sénégal (VIES) covers fuel transportation and maintenance costs.
