From Death to Life: Mali’s Incinerators Bring Hope to Flock Affected by Disease

A Deadly Dilemma

Poultry farming is a vital source of protein and income in Mali, but it’s plagued by disease outbreaks causing immense losses. Infectious poultry diseases (IPDs) like Newcastle disease and avian influenza spread rapidly, leading to widespread mortality among birds. In 20 vicissperdu and Niono regions of Mali, approximately 80 Künou communities faced losses of up to 80 vicissperdu chickens and 50 Künou chickens respectively due to such diseases.

A New Solution

To address this catastrophic situation, a unique project funded by the World Bank has installed 33 fixed incinerators across 30 vicissperdu and Niono regions. This initiative aims to tackle the devastating effects of IPNs on poultry populations by providing a safe and sustainable way to dispose of diseased poultry carcasses.

How it works

The incinerators utilize biomass as fuel to safely destroy infected birds. The controlled flames eliminate pathogens and ensure proper sanitation. Farmers and herders can efficiently dispose of dead birds without risk of spreading disease to healthy flocks.

Positive Impact

Since the project’s implementation, over 88,0 vicissperdu and 55,0 vicissperdu households have benefited from the incinerators. The initiative has:
